In 2020, Merrimack joined the ranks of colleges awarded the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement! A designation attributed to only 2% of colleges nationwide, this award is given based on an institution’s efforts to resolve social issues and inequities related to education.
The Carnegie Foundation recognized the impact Merrimack has had across the Merrimack Valley, especially in the city of Lawrence. Here are a few ways Merrimack has made a difference:
- High-achieving students at Abbott Lawrence Academy have access to an Early College Program at Merrimack where they can earn college credits while still in high school
- Each year, 10 Early College students are awarded full scholarships to Merrimack, covering tuition, room and board, fees and books
- Lawrence residents can get free financial advice, including tax preparation, at the Financial Capability Center
- Many local elementary schools, daycares, nursing homes, homeless shelters and other community service organizations rely on the more than 1,000 Merrimack students who volunteer their time through the Stevens Service Learning Center every year
- Local families depend on The Food Recovery Network, an organization that fights food waste and provides meals for the food insecure.
